It all started in 1986 when they first met in a band.  Martha sang and Mike played guitar.  It was a secular band, and if you had said they would be a Christian duo 25 years later, well, they probably would have laughed.

It’s amazing to look back and see how God has worked. Little by little He showed them both that He had plans for them.

After getting married in 1995 and then having 2 children, Martha felt she needed to bring their children up in a church, the way she had been raised.  Knowing how her life could have ended up without God, she believed knowing God’s love was the most important thing for a child. After hopping from church to church then moving into a new home, Martha was invited to attend a church her neighbors went to.  She really liked it and invited Mike to come, noting that the pastor played guitar and led worship, something he could relate to. Mike attended one day, and felt the presence of the Lord. After a few months, Mike had accepted Christ and been saved. They were both baptized together a short time after that.

They started doing special music at church, and received a lot of positive feedback. After their pastor went to another church they ended up there as well.  The church was in great need of people to be on the worship team, so Martha and Mike offered to help.  After four years of being on the worship team, they decided to make a CD, because they felt it was a way they could use their gifts to glorify God and spread His word.

The name Averstone comes from the name of the street they lived on for many years.  After deciding to use that name for their duo, they came to find that roughly translated it means “rock of truth” (very cool).  How appropriate was that? So they had to keep the name.  They are now in the process of adding additional band members to give them a fuller sound.  They pray that God will continue to bless their ministry and continue to give them songs to write about His glory.

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
